Manual-Transmission Information and Maintenance

Clutch Tips
On a vehicle with a manual transmission, be aware of the clutch’s “feel,” and schedule your vehicle for professional transmission maintenance if you experience any significant changes in your clutch’s operation.

Following these manual-transmission tips to maximize the life of your clutch and reduce the need for transmission maintenance:
  1. Fully remove your foot from the clutch pedal after each shift. If you do not, the clutch may not fully "release," potentially resulting in slippage that quickly destroys the clutch facing as well as other parts.
  2. Your vehicle's clutch assembly should always have some "free play." The clutch pedal should always move a little, with very light pressure (from one-half to one inch), before heavier pressure is felt, which means the clutch’s pressure plate is being released. This is required for the clutch to properly transmit all engine power to the wheels.
  3. Never shift gears without using the clutch or fully depressing the clutch pedal.
  4. If you detect any changes in your transmission’s operation, such as grinding or other noises as you change gears, seek professional advice immediately at your local Kennedy Transmission maintenance center. There is never a charge for us to test drive your vehicle or address any of your concerns, plus free road tests do not require appointments.
