Automatic-Transmission Information and Maintenance

Electronic Controls
The majority of automatic vehicles manufactured during this decade use a computer to monitor and direct the operating of the transmission. These computers rely on a vehicle's sensors to provide auto-transmission information to decide what commands to issue to the transmission. In many cases, the computer will force the transmission into a "failure mode" if it detects problems. This failure mode is designed to warn you to get your vehicle immediately to a Kennedy Transmission maintenance facility, where additional damage can be prevented.

On any vehicle with a computer-controlled transmission, the first transmission maintenance is to diagnose any concern by verifying that all sensors are operating properly. When you utilize Kennedy’s transmission-repair services, we'll explain if your vehicle has computer controls. Next, we'll recommend whether or not to scan your vehicle, which involves attaching a diagnostic computer to the vehicle and checking all sensors.
